Contract with KARA for hourly research work to be completed on specifc family names or individuals at either the basic $25.00 per hour rate or the detailed research rate of $50.00 per hour.
Some KARA volunteers make monthly trips to the Ontario Archives in Toronto and while there will, for a nominal fee ($3 each registration or two for $5), pick up BMD registrations for you.
You search the ONTARIO VITAL STATS Index births, marriages or deaths microfilm for the person/event. Index films are available at KARA's Research Centre.
- Make note of the full name, the date of the event, the place of the event and the registration number.
- Complete an ONTARIO VITAL STATS order form available at the KARA Research Centre or click the icon below to display a printable image on your monitor.
- You may hand your order form with payment to a volunteer staff member or mail the form with payment enclosed, to KARA, P.O. Box 162, Peterborough ON, K9J 6Y8.
Both registration and film/reel numbers are required to complete a look-up. After obtaining the registration number from an Ontario Vital Statistics Index microfilm, you'll need to reference a film list to obtain the film/reel number. Registration documents are filmed in groups, each group containing hundreds of reels of film. Lookups cover:
-
MS929
Represents the birth registration group. Using the number obtained from the index, look up and quote the film/reel number associated with that index number.
-
MS932
Represents the marriage registration group. Using the number obtained from the index, look up and quote the film/reel number associated with that index number.
-
MS935
Represents the death registration group. Using the number obtained from the index, look up and quote the film/reel number associated with that index number.
Carefully confirm the number of the film/reel that contains the desired document image. Film lists are available at our Ancestral Research Centre or online at the Ontario Archives website.
