Trees & Forebears is the quarterly publication of KARA and is included as part of membership with the organization. With its beginnings going back to the fall of 1998, there are now over 30 issues of fascinating family history to tickle the fancy of family history researchers.

Four issues of this magazine are produced annually - March, June, September and December. Articles range from the earliest times of settlement in this region, such as the December 2005 story about the life of Public Land Surveyor Richard Birdsall to events that occurred in more recent times, such as the book review of The Tall Soldier, a story about a Canadian Soldier who fought in the Spanish Civil War.

Trees & Forebears carries announcements about forth coming KARA events and sometimes includes brief reviews of events that have taken place, simply to inform our members of current activities in the organization. For those holding Family Reunions and similar events, advertising can be arranged through the publication committee. The price per insertion varies with the selected size of the advertisement.

Trees & Forebears provides KARA members with a means of sharing their family stories and research results. Stories can be submitted to the publication committee for consideration as material to be included in future issues of the magazine. Members can also submit two Queries per year for inclusion in issues of the magazine.

Issues of Trees & Forebears includes extract from many different source materials such as newspaper births, marriages and deaths, church registers and the Ontario Vital Statistics registrations.

Over the years there have been many writers for our Trees & Forebears magazine. In 1999 - 2000 the late Robert Bowley provided several articles on the progress of a number of local area post offices. From 2000 to 2002, Shelley Lunney made significant written and editorial contributions. Since 2002, Gayle Nelson has been a regular contributor, researching and writing extensively on the history of this area, often with a particular interest in the Otonabee Township families. Back in 2003 another local writer, Linda Hope, also became one of our steadfast regulars with two and more storey-articles per issue. Her submissions enjoy wide popularity. For the past few years, Barb Milburn has managed the preparation of vital statistics inclusion, often one of the first items which our readership seeks out in each new issue. Sylvia Best has been another writer with many submissions going back to 1998 and the beginnings of the Trees & Forebears publication. There has been considerable supporting material provided by KARA members over the years. It all adds up to a publication that keeps growing better with each passing year.

Trees & Forebears is available with a KARA membership. To join KARA…. Past Issues: While the current issue is available through membership, any left over past issues are bundled in sets of four and offered for sale. Visit the KARA Web Store to purchase back issues of T & F.
